Many scammers are very cunning, so being smart is not enough to protect yourself.

Despite the increased efforts to strengthen Internet security in recent years, cybercrime has jumped enormously.
During the holidays, cyber crooks are guite savvy at setting up false web sites that look legitimate, and even better at sending phoney electronic greeting cards to consumers.

Experts warn that what looks like an innocent Christmas card could contain some code allowing a perpetrator to download someone's personal information.
This could be credit card information, banking information allowing someone to compromise accounts, sell information and essentially do economic harm.
Online scammers sometimes even direct their victims to legitimate companies' websites but launch popups over them attempting to grab personal information, according to the FBI.
Banking, credit card and other information that Internet scamsters scarf up is usually sold on to other cybercriminals who later hit accounts for cash withdrawals and unauthorised purchases, according to the bureau.
Some advice includes updating virus software, and if you should become a victim then contact the FBI Internet Complaint Center immediately.
