UM Campus Reopens After Suspects Fire BB Gun

CORAL GABLES (CBS4) ― The University of Miami's Coral Gables campus reopened Friday afternoon after being closed for an hour following reports of a shooting involving a BB gun.

UM's Police Department said four people -- two men in the front seat and two women in the back seat -- drove through the area around the Wellness Center and dining hall and fired the BB gun multiple times from a rolled down window.

A surveillance camera captured the image of a suspected vehicle -- a silver, 4-door Volvo S-70 bearing the Florida license plate 752XQC.

CBS4's News Intern Gaby Loria captured administrators pulling students walking by indoors.

"I saw students not really taking this very seriously," Loria told CBS4's David Sutta. "This is actually the fourth incident this semester where we've had some kind of incident on campus. So more than anything students were feeling, not annoyed, but again?"

By 3:37 p.m., campus police issued the following information posted to the school's website: "An ALL CLEAR has been issued regarding the incident on campus. Suspects are in custody. The campus is safe and secure and has been reopened. More details are forthcoming."

UM officials had sent out massive emails and text messages at 2:45 p.m. instructing students and faculty to "stay away from windows" and not to "open locked doors for anyone."

"They're saying that someone brought a BB gun on campus. A few days ago there was a robbery and someone came with a gun on campus," said Jarrett Yanoff, a UM student. "It's a lot of drama."

Anyone with information about the vehicle is asked to call UM Police at 305-284-6666.
