In Nicole Marsala's classroom at Coral Springs Middle School, her students are surrounded by American history from a giant copy of the Declaration of Independence to flags of nations, and newspaper clippings of current events.
This "Teacher of the Year" just doesn't teach about the country's forefathers within four walls, she's going to be in DC to help them witness it.
Fifty eighth graders from Coral Springs Middle School are taking their lesson on the road.
"We're going to the capital of the United States of America in Washington, D.C.," exclaimed Juan Valencia, whose family recently arrived to America. He'll be the first in his family to see a president being sworn in.
Classmate Hannah Santo explained it's an opportunity she couldn't pass up.
"He's made history, and it's just a really great honor to see an inauguration period," she said, "It's the first black president so who wouldn't want to go see it."
The trip to see history unfold is paid by each student, about $1,200, which will cover airfare, lodging, food and fees to the museums they'll frequent.
"We're all just getting ready to go on the big trip and take it all in," Santo added.
Santo's teacher wants her students to witness history and not just read about it.
Florida Congressman Ron Klein and Senator Mel Martinez have also assisted in the school's trip, some of whose students will be blogging, taking photos and videos and sharing them with CBS4.COM
