Two Injured In Aventura Roof Top Accident

AVENTURA (CBS4) ― Two people were injured when a small crane collapsed at an Aventura apartment building.

Miami Dade Fire Rescue workers were called to the roof top of the Turnberry Isles apartments at 19600 Turnberry Way to assist the injured men who were hurt when a portable crane they were using to move an air conditioning unit collapsed.

One of the injured men is the owner of a roofing company; the other man is his employee. Investigators said the men were in the process of moving an air conditioning unit from a large crane to the smaller portable crane when the smaller crane collapsed.

One of the injured men, initially placed on a backboard and in a neck brace as a precaution, suffered a broken arm and leg. He also had some minor injuries to his back and neck. The other man suffered several cuts to his head.

Doctors had one man listed in serious condition and the other in stable.

This scene comes just one week after another incident with a crane in Downtown Miami left two people dead. Thursday the group Associated Builders and Contractors backed a statewide proposal to bring more regulation to the use of cranes. It would require certification for owners and operators. Right now, just about anyone can legally operate a crane without any certification.

"You could have anybody walking off the street right now, jump into that crane and operate it, which the crane owners and contractors and everything don't want that," said Bruce Whitten, representing the association.

Whitten encourages the requirement of certification.
