Crane Topples Over At Construction Site

Fifth Crane Mishap In South Florida In 2008

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― A crane about 100-feet in height collapsed on its side at a construction site behind the Galleria mall Tuesday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale at 900 NE 26th. A driver was pulled from the cab with serious injuries, and the accident itself is being investigated.

Matt Little of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said that the victim was transported to nearby Broward General Medical Center .

The crane was being used to perform some roof repairs, and is the fifth crane accident in South Florida this year.

A father and son escaped serious injury when a section of a 318-foot crane collapsed in Miami in mid-June.  Workers told police they were trying to raise the top portion of the crane at a construction site at 14th Street and North Bayshore Drive when apparently something gave way, causing the crane's arm to fall back down and close in--similar to the motion of closing a pair of scissors while pointing it to the ground. The crane did not collapse or fall.

In March, two construction workers were killed and five others injured in a crane accident just four blocks away at a Miami high-rise condominium construction site. A 20-foot-long, 7 ton chunk of construction crane plummeted 30 floors and smashed into a home that the contractor used for storage.

About a week later, a small crane collapsed on the roof of a building in Aventura. The crane was moving an air conditioning unit, two men were hurt.

A few days after that incident, a crane collapsed in Ft. Lauderdale. Workers were moving an overloaded dumpster when a section of the crane buckled and collapsed. No injuries were reported.
