Court Temporarily Halts Crane Regulation

Miami-Dade County sought the stricter rule after fatal crane accidents in 2008

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A federal court dealt the Miami-Dade County Commission a legal setback in the battle to regulate cranes in the area. The court ordered a temporary halt to the regulations recently passed by the county commission after two deadly crane accidents this year.

The dispute is between crane operators, state, and county officials, each of which want jurisdiction over the regulations.

The original measure passed by the commission would have increased inspections and safety measures.

The petition to have the rule halted was filed by a coalition of crane and constructions industry groups. They claimed the stricter rules would set a standard so high; none of the 200 tower cranes in the area could possibly meet.
