Daughter Of Murdered Security Guard Speaks Out

Murdered Security Guard Worked Two Jobs To Support Family

Daughter Says Dad Wanted Better Life For His Children

HIALEAH (CBS4) ― The day after 51-year old Carlos Alvarado was gunned down for a bag full of cash at Dadeland Mall, a police manhunt continued for the two men who ambushed him.

In an interview with CBS4 reporter Gary Nelson, the murdered man's daughter said he worked two jobs putting her and her brother through college at Florida International University.

"We're trying to survive now without him. He was a hard working man and he'll be missed," Karla Alvarado said, her voice choked with tears. "We don't know why this happened to us."

Alvarado lived with his daughter, son, Carlos, and his wife of 23 years in a modest, salmon-colored townhouse in a blue collar neighborhood of west Hialeah.

Karla Alvarado said her father wanted his children to have a better life than he had, and worked tirelessly to help finance their education.

"He worked for Dunbar, and also worked another security job," she said. "My mom also works full time."

In its grief, the murdered man's family cried out for help in bringing his killers to justice.

"We ask the community to give us a chance to find these robbers, so they don't do this again, and take someone's father," Karla Alvarado said, weeping. "We just need everybody's prayers to survive this."

Alvarado, a Dunbar guard since 1999, was set upon in the Express Clothing store Monday before he could deliver a satchel of money to his armored car waiting just outside in the mall parking lot.

Police have released only a vague description of the gunmen, who they say were wearing dark clothing and hood-type head coverings. An earlier BOLO (be on the lookout) for a cream-colored Lincoln sedan was rescinded by Miami-Dade police. A spokesman said investigators had determined the car was not involved in the robbery and murder.

Carlos Alvarado immigrated to the United States from his homeland of Peru more than 20 years ago.

Karla Alvarado said the family does not have the money to pay for her father's funeral arrangements.

"He wanted to be buried back home, in Peru," She said. "We don't know if we're going to be able to get him home."
