Security At Dadeland Mall Is Going To The Dogs

K-9 Security Patrols Now Being Used At Dadeland Mall

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Security at one of South Florida's most popular shopping malls is going to the dogs, K-9 security dogs.

Dadeland Mall has added a K-9 security patrol to work both inside and outside of the mall. The highly-trained German Shepherd and handler make their way throughout the mall at various times to deter any potential criminal activity and disorderly conduct.

Shoppers in the mall welcomed their new four-legged friends.

""A lot of people have dogs and they feel protected. Seeing them will make them feel protected," said Dorothy Anders. Barbara Lapsley agreed,"I truly believe in this. I think with the way crime is right now, we need protection."

The independent security group, IPC International, runs the K-9 patrol. "Canine patrol acts as a visual deterrent with the ability and advanced skills to protect and respond immediately if a dangerous situation was to arise," said John Lusher, vice president, IPC International. "As a full-service security organization serving over 500 shopping centers, we applaud our client, Simon Property Group, for their investment in K-9 patrol as another tool to ensure mall safety."

Ozzie Dominguez, General Manager of Dadeland Mall, said there are measures in place in case the pooch turns against the very customers he's meant to protect--in the event that he's having a bad day.

"He's very well trained," said. "He's with his handler; he's on a leash; he has a muzzle, and he is trained to respond only when necessary."

The Shops at Sunset Place in South Miami, which is another Simon Property, also uses K-9 security patrols. If the program is a success, K-9 patrols could start in Broward County at Coral Square and Sawgrass Mills.
