Davie, Plantation Considering 'Accident Fees'

DAVIE (CBS4) ― Drivers in certain parts of Broward County may soon have to pay extra if they get into an accident.

Later this month the Town of Davie will consider whether to charge people from outside the town who found at fault in traffic accidents. Plantation, Miramar and Southwest Ranches are exploring similar proposals.

Some drivers in Davie say the plan irks them. "An accident is an accident. Regardless of the location you are in," said Haden Polizzi.

The plan would only charge non-residents for accidents that required assistance from Davie Fire and Police. The bill would average around $840 per accident and could generate around $700,000 for the city.

"The idea was to recoup some of that by basically, billing people that are involved in accidents. An accident tax," said Davie mayor Tom Truex.

Still, some critics say only billing non-residents is not the best plan. "As we investigate and as we find things out, We're seeing that billing non residents only may not be the best way to approach this," said Miramar Fire Chief Bill Huff.

Last July, the City of Pembroke Pines voted against imposing 'accident fees' saying they would expose the city to costly legal challenges.
