Military Inspecting Old Bombing Range In Davie

DAVIE (CBS4) ― The Army Corps of Engineers is checking out a former World War II practice bombing range in Davie to make sure there are no harmful weapons fragments buried or lying around on the surface.

The Stirling Bomb Target range is located near Vista View Park at I-75 and Griffin Road.

During the war, fighter and bomber pilots from air stations across South Florida would swoop over the area, dropping bombs that each produced a puff of smoke and an impact equivalent to that of a 12-gauge shotgun.

There are about 700 former bomb targets statewide, including 11 in Broward County. After the inspection is complete at the Stirling Bomb Target, the military will have three more sites to check out in county.

Charles Fales, who is heading up the inspection project for the military, says so far they haven't found any of the old bombs or bomb fragments. He said if there are any there, they may be potentially harmful. Military officials have run an ad asking residents to call with information about any weapon fragments they have found.
