Three South Florida teenagers pleaded not guilty to attempted second-degree murder charges Thursday morning in connection with the case of 15-year-old Michael Brewer, a Deerfield Beach boy who was intentionally set on fire, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Matthew Bent and Denver Jarvis, both 15, and Jesus Mendez, 16, are accused of dousing Michael Brewer with rubbing alcohol and setting him on fire on Oct. 12. All three are charged as adults.
Brewer remains hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital with second and third-degree burns covering more than 65 percent of his body.
Circuit Judge Dale Cohen set the teens' next hearing for Jan. 17.
According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Michael was set on fire in retaliation for his family telling authorities that Bent tried to steal a custom bicycle owned by Michael's dad.
The boy had tried to steal the bike because Michael owed him $40 for a video game, the sheriff's office said.
Each faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
CBS4's Shannon Hori recently spoke to Brewer's parents and grandmother about the day of the attack, Michael's recovery and how he's coping.
