Burned Teen's Grandma: Keep Sending Love, Prayers

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Friday marks 40 days since a Deerfield Beach teenager was intentionally set on fire by five other teens in a dispute over money, according to BSO.

Brewer remains hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital with second and third-degree burns covering more than 65 percent of his body.

Now his grandmother Reenie Brewer, has written CBS4 News to update his condition. In an e-mail sent to CBS4, Reenie wrote:

"Last night in a new room that allows us to have several family members at the same time, Mikie let Grandma feed him a whole plate of pasta and a whole container of chocolate milk. His voice is coming back and he walked 10 steps during his physical therapy. The showers are very painful and our Valerie had to go in with him, she was awesome, his Dad called me and said he yelled for him and me, but he made it through and looks 110% better. We have more surgeries to do that will continue the repairing of his skin, and the donor skin is working beautifully. Please DO NOT STOP SENDING YOUR LOVE , PRAYERS AND POSITIVE ENERGY, The road will be a long one, with many bumps, but like any bump they are less painful with support.

Thank you all, and may the blessings you have given come back to you many times over!!!
Love,
Reenie Brewer

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Michael was set on fire in retaliation for his family telling authorities that Matthew Bent, 15, tried to steal a custom bicycle owned by Michael's dad.

The boy had tried to steal the bike because Michael owed him $40 for a video game, the sheriff's office said.

Bent, Denver Jarvis, also 15, and Jesus Mendez, 16, all pleaded not guilty on Thursday to attempted second-degree murder charges. All three are charged as adults.

Each faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

CBS4's Shannon Hori recently spoke to Brewer's parents and grandmother about the day of the attack, Michael's recovery and how he's coping.
