BSO Troubled By Officer Shootings

Fast Facts: Fallen Police Officers In S. Florida

Third BSO Deputy Shot In As Many Months

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Wednesday morning's shooting of a BSO detention deputy if the third shooting of a BSO deputy in as many months, and is just the latest tragedy in a department which seems marked by attacks on it's deputies.

Deputy Maury Hernandez was shot in the head Aug. 6 during a traffic stop, after he tried to stop a motorcyclist he claimed was speeding and driving erratically. He suffered massive head injuries and was given a poor chance for recovery, but made what doctors called miraculous progress and was released from the hospital Oct. 25.

The suspect in the Hernandez shooting is in custody and awaiting trial.

Less than a week later, on August 10th, Sergeant Chris Reyka, 51, was shot and killed  as he was looking for stolen vehicles behind a Walgreens drug store in Pompano Beach on August 10th.

Police mounted a massive manhunt, and have posted a $267 thousand reward, but still have not found the car believed used in the shooting or the suspects who may have killed the deputy.

Both deputies were shot before former sheriff Ken Jenne resigned from office following a criminal indictment. This is the first deputy shot in the line of duty under the administration of interim sheriff Al Lamberti.
