Oprah's Heart Surgeon With A Big Heart

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Most people know Dr. Mehmet Oz from his appearances on Oprah, but he's a world renowned heart specialist, has published hundreds of medical articles, and saved countless lives.

"I built my reputation actually doing heart transplantation, and mechanical heart device implants," explained Oz.

That's why he's being honored with this year's Lois Pop LIFE International Research Award at the University of Miami. Oz says, a few simple steps can keep all of us living healthier longer.

"It's not about avoiding cancer or heart disease, it's about avoiding frailty," explained Oz.

And it's easy, everyone needs to know their numbers

First: aim for an optimal blood pressure, that's 115 / 75

Know your fasting blood sugar: it should be under 100

And then, know your waist size. Oz explains: "If you take a measuring tape and you put it around your waist, at the level of your belly button. What's that number, and is it one-half your height or less. That's your goal."

And speaking of waist size, Oprah has battled the bulge, successfully for years. Oz says, the queen of daytime talk is a perfect patient.

"Talk about a woman who is self realized," said Oz. "She knows exactly why she does what she does. Like all of us, she has challenges that she has to overcome, but that's what makes her so wonderful as a human being."

He says a healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management are doctor's orders that will work for anyone.

Previous winners of the Lois Pope Life International Award, include two diabetes researchers at the University of Miami, Dr. Camillo Riccordi and Dr. Mary Bungee, as well as the late Dr. Judah Folkman who was a world renowned cancer researcher.
