Miami-Dade Police Conduct Massive Drug Sweep

On Thursday, the Miami-Dade police department held a massive drug sweep around the county. Police said they were looking for suspects who were buying or distributing drugs near local schools.

The undercover action was called "Operation School Zone." Police concentrated their sweep on dealers around both schools and local churches. Over 100 detectives and officers were a part of the bust.

Police called the people they arrested "the bad guys," and said those that were rounded up had both drugs and were carrying weapons near schools and churches.

"Our officers were buying drugs from the bad guys and a second team of officers immediately comes and arrested them. That way it makes this area and neighborhood safer, especially for the kids," said Miami-Dade Major Charles Nanney.

The day long sweep began at 6:00 A.M. and lasted through 5:00 P.M. Police say some of the people arrested during the sweep could serve a 3-year minimum mandatory sentence for selling drugs or having guns within a school zone or near a church.
