Man Sentenced To 30 Years In Child Porn Case

Thousands Of Pornographic Images Found On Hard Drive

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― A Margate man who accepted a plea deal on charges of production and possession of child pornography has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Dwayne Dean was sentenced Thursday morning in federal court in Ft. Lauderdale.

According to a special agent with the FBI's Crimes Against Children division, Dean went to the Calvary Chapel Church in Coral Springs in March, 2007 looking for a place to run his summer program for at risk kids called Dean's Academy. While there he spoke with a congregant who said he could help Dean fix his home computer.

The congregant said when he went to Dean's apartment at 240 Southwest 56th Avenue in Margate he saw several high school kids hanging out. Over the next several weeks the congregant visited Dean's apartment in an effort to fix the computer. On one of his visits, he would later tell investigators, he copied some of Dean's files onto a hard drive he found in the trash at Dean's apartment. A short time later, the 'trash' hard drive started making clicking sounds. Fearing he would lose all the file data he had copied over, the congregant copied the contents of the 'trash' hard drive to a new drive he had brought with him.

When he checked the new drive to make sure that no files had been lost in the transfer, the congregant found several thousand pictures of young males engaged in sexual activity.

Concerned that some of the images may have involved under age teens, the congregant said he copied the files to a CD and brought them to Gustavo Flores, the pastor of Calvary Chapel.

Flores said of the more than 6-thousand pictures on the CD of young males a handful appeared to be boys under the age of 18 years old posed in sexually suggestive positions.

Flores contacted the police who in turn contacted the FBI.

According to a sworn statement by a federal agent with the Crimes Against Children Squad, she found at least three images of under-aged boys posed in sexually explicit positions. Some of the 6,213 images on the CD appear to have been taken in Dean's apartment.

The FBI was able to track down one of the boys in the pictures. He told the FBI investigator that days after he met Dean outside of the Margate Library in May, 2002, he agreed to pose for pictures and allow Dean to perform a sexual act on him; he was only 15-years old at the time. Both the sexual contact and the photographs occurred at Dean's apartment.

In May, 2007 Dean was arrested and charged with multiple counts of enticing a minor to engage in sexually explicit behavior for the purposes of a visual depiction which can be transmitted for interstate or foreign commerce and possession of child pornography.
