New Alternative To Botox For Wrinkle Free Skin

MIAMI (CBS4) ― For decades Botox has been used by women, and some men, to fight wrinkles. Officially sanctioned in 2002 by the Food and Drug Administration, millions of injections have been administered to 'tighten a little here' or 'lift a little there'.

Now, for the first time, Botox is getting some competition.

A new product called Dysport works like Botox with some added benefits.

"I have a lovely forehead but it tends to smile when I'm not smiling," said Katy, a South Beach mom who admits to being '30ish'.

Katy said she sought professional help in doing something about her wrinkles.

"I wanted to eliminate the horizontal crease yet still have some expression," said Katy.

Michael Mellion, 58, was hoping to lose what are called the 11's between his eyebrows.

"I take care of all other parts of my body. I exercise well, I eat well, and I want to make sure my face is well," said Mellion.

Both Michael and Katy are hoping to diminish their wrinkles with Dysport.

"It's a product that works by weakening the muscles of your face that cause wrinkles," explained Dr. Jacob Steiger who specializes in facial plastic surgery.

According to Steiger, Dysport is designed for wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes.

"It's going to bring a little more competition to the marketplace. Studies have shown that there might be an increase in duration of time that the Dysport works over Botox. Dysport does work quicker than Botox," said Steiger.

In fact, it may start working in three days as opposed to seven days with Botox. Another benefit is less injection sites are needed to achieve success. And for those patient's who are now immune to Botox, Dysport may be their dream come true.

"At the end of the day the patients are going to benefit and that makes me happy," said Steiger.

The product has been available in Europe but was just approved by FDA last month.

Steiger said it should cost about 10-percent less than Botox.
