An Earth Day First For South Florida

MIAMI LAKES (CBS4) ― With another Earth Day here, we need to think about the ways we help or hurt our planet. One South Florida restaurant wants to lead the way; in fact, it's the only certified green restaurant.

From the hormone-free chicken to the locally grown produce and from the cleaning products to the bathrooms, Chick-n-Grill is the first in South Florida to be named a certified green restaurant.

"It's pretty neat the way that the cup will disintegrate within 90 days and the forks and everything here," a customer inside the new Miami Lakes restaurant told CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

The police officers, the authority on the streets, are glad to hear the place wants to lay down the law when it comes to the planet. This restaurant in a little strip mall off Miami Lakes Drive is definitely making a difference. "It's the right thing to do for people. It's the right thing to do for the environment. It's the way of the future," said Al Sales, the C.E.O. of Koning Restaurants International.

CBS4 News checked with the Green Restaurant Association who told us Chick-n-Grill is only one of three establishments in the state to be certified green. From water usage to energy consumption and from packaging to education, the certification takes months. The place gets spot-checked and employees have to submit invoices of everything they buy green.

Customers say it's worth it. "Of course it is! It makes everything healthier; it would make us much healthier and a lot less overweight," said one customer.

The restaurant wants to spread their environmentally-friendly message not only to their other establishments in South Florida, but also to their competitors.
