A South Florida man remains in critical condition after police say he was shot by a robber in front of his wife and two young children.
Investigators said Lomberto Echane, 35, was coming home from the mall with his wife and kids Sunday afternoon.
The family pulled up in their driveway at 1:50 p.m. in their 2004 Toyota Sequoia on the 12700 block of SW 250th Terrace, and Echane got out to help his 2-year-old son Jose and 1-year-old son Brian out of their car seats, Miami-Dade police said.
That's when police said a gunman came up behind the dad demanding jewelry and cash. Echane gave the robber what he wanted, including a thick gold chain from around his neck.
Despite giving the gunman what he wanted, the suspect fired two shots toward Echane and began to run away.
Echane ran after him. The suspect then fired more shots and Echane was hit. He collapsed at the corner of SW 127 Court.
No one else in the family was hurt.
Echane was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
The victim's mother-in-law, Berta Echane, says he is in intensive care, on a ventilator, after surgery for devastating abdominal wounds. She says the 2 ½ year old, Jose, is traumatized after seeing the whole thing. "He keeps screaming, 'Daddy, Daddy!'" she said. "He witnessed the shot hitting his father."
Berta Echane says her son-in-law works hard to support his family as a construction worker.
Neighbor Rodney Hussey described the victim as a doting father. "He always walks around with his kids. He's an all-around good person," Hussey said.
Neighbor Maurice Paul said the robbery and shooting shattered the tranquility of the working class neighborhood of well maintained homes and nicely kept lawns. "It shakes you up. It brings you back to reality," Paul said, "a sad reality."
Miami-Dade police on Monday issued a Be On The Lookout (BOLO) for the suspect, who is described as 6 feet tall weighing about 190 to 200 pounds wearing a black shirt and a black ski mask. Police also released the picture of the suspect's light green mini-van, believed to have been used as the getaway car.
