At a time when retailers are suffering, there's one business definitely booming: liquidation. South Florida liquidators are awash with clothes, shoes, cosmetics, furniture and electronics.
The warehouse at Topper International Liquidators in Hallandale Beach is filled to the rafters. "At the moment, we're exploding," President Stephen Topper told CBS 4 News Reporter Joan Murray.
His warehouse is home to racks of wedding and evening gowns, boxes full of shoes in every color and make-up made by Clinique, Estee Lauder and MAC.
Topper says this is the busiest he's been in 20 years. He buys the goods for just pennies on the dollar and then sells it back to discount stores and overseas.
Topper also sells to the public over the internet. You can see some of his inventory on
his website.
On the other end of Broward County in Tamarac, AMC Liquidators has a tsunami of inventory. CEO Mike Grimme buys new and used furniture and home furnishings.
"We're able to buy at attractive and prices and offer everything, from a $19 dollar lamp to a chandelier worth hundreds of dollars," said Grimme.
AMC has a showroom open to the public located on Commercial Boulevard in Tamarac. You can see some of the inventory on
their website.
Neil Sutton came looking for filing cabinets for his skilled nursing office. He didn't leave disappointed. Sutton bought several filing cabinets for $69. He says in a retail store they would have cost at least $200 a piece. "I tell my friends this is the time to buy. It will never be this cheap," Grimme said.
