Early Voting For Primary Election Underway

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Early voting for the August 26 primary election began on Monday. The state of Florida calls it a primary election, even though it already held a Presidential primary in January.

This will mark the first round in selecting candidates for the Florida House and Senate, and other state offices like Sheriff and State Attorney.

When it comes to registration, Democrats are fairing much better than their Republican counterparts. Democrats have increased their numbers by over 250,000 since January, compared to less than 100,000 for Republicans. Statewide, Florida has 4.4 million Democrats, 3.9 million Republicans, and 2.3 million voters who have no party affiliation.

Along with voting for state offices, Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties all have local candidates on the ballot. In Miami-Dade, commissioners and school board members face re-election, as do school board members in one Monroe district.

Broward County has a number of county commission seats open, as well as three school board races.

If you are voting in Broward County, you can check out the Broward County Supervisor of Elections web site. You can also see the new paper ballot (.pdf format) being used in this election, and to see the hours and locations of early voting sites, click here
