Members of Florida's Electoral College met on Monday to cast their votes for President-elect Barack Obama. Typically, the Electoral College vote is more ceremonial than anything.
However, even though the electors vote is based upon the outcome of the popular vote, there is no law through most states making the electors vote this way. In fact, in the 1988 election, one member of a state's Electoral College actually voted for Lloyd Bentsen as President and Michael Dukakis as Vice-President, which was the exact opposite of the way the ticket was voted on by voters.
Monday's meeting was held in the Florida Senate chambers at 2 p.m.
The entire Electoral College across 50 states and the District of Columbia cast 537 votes Monday. 270, a simple majority, is needed to be named President of the United States.
