MIAMI (CBS4) ― With the cost of fuel on the rise, the price of food is skyrocketing at the supermarkets.

To help South Floridians who find they can no longer afford to feed their families, food banks like Farm Share ask local farmers and businesses to donate fresh food and produce.

"First of the month, we have five, six, maybe eight hundred people a day," said Farm Share volunteer Danette Wheeler.

The only charitable produce packing house on the East Coast, Farm Share is focused on bringing in nutritional food to Florida families. But like many food banks – the fresh food is fading and more cans are coming in.

Something that Vicky Fayad has started to notice.

"The cans aren't everything," said Fayad, "They need fresh food or fresh vegetables."

It's also hard to keep up with their rising distribution list. Locally based, Farm Share distributes food to all 67 counties in Florida free of charge. Every month more and more people are in need of their services.

"They need to give out a lot more food," said Wheeler, "because a lot of people complain that it's not enough."

Farm Share works hard to keep costs down by using volunteer inmate labor to work at their warehouses. But as the economy worsens, donations have decreased while increased demand for their services has impacted the amount of food they've been able to hand out.

"Look, now it's just a little bag and some bread," said Irma Luna who relies on Farm Share to feed her family, "where is the chicken, the vegetables, they were all fresh."

If you'd like to help bring food to the table of the families Farm Share supports, give Neighbors 4 Neighbors a call at (305) 597-4404 and participate in our Food 4 South Florida drive.
