Police Identify Downtown Miami Crash Victims
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The victims of a deadly accident in downtown Miami on Thursday have been identified. Maria Carillo, 49, of Tampa lost her life in the accident, while her daughter 17-year-old Lillian Carillo was critically injured. The two were in town to attend an event in the downtown area when a pickup truck spun out in wet conditions and hit them.
The accident happened just before 4 p.m. Thursday at the beginning of rush-hour traffic.
Police say the accident occurred when a westbound Toyota Tundra pickup truck somehow spun out and broadsided a southbound red, Honda CRV. The driver of the Honda received head injuries and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.
CBS4 spoke with her husband at her home in the Country Walk section of Southwest Miami-Dade. He told us his wife had spoken extensively with police detectives and believes the truck that hit her ran a red light. He said his wife was stopped at the intersection and moved forward when the light changed to green.
Her husband told us she was sleeping because of her medication and head injuries and was not able to speak.
"Running red lights is a South Florida disease," he said. "And that's something that's got to stop."
At the accident scene on Thursday,
CBS4's David Sutta tried to speak with the woman who police told us was driving the Toyota Tundra. She told us she was too upset to talk, but nodded her head when Sutta asked her if she was involved in the accident.
Shortly after that, she was called in to a nearby building where she was questioned by detectives. She left, with her head down and her child in tow, telling Sutta, "I don't want to say anything."
Police say the accident is under investigation and no charges have been filed. The driver of the Toyota Tundra was allowed to leave the scene.
