TS Fay Sends Surfers Some Gnarly Waves

HAULOVER BEACH (CBS4) ― For most people, when a storm like Fay blows through, it is time for some 'inside' entertainment; watching movies, reading a book or just laying around relaxing.

But for others it means the search for the perfect wave.

CBS4's Lisa Petrillo checked out Haulover Beach on Tuesday where the surfing crowd called the action 'totally rad'.

"It was great all morning," said surfer David Shroeder, "we got out here about 7:30 this morning, good times."

Closed to swimmers, surfers had the run of Haulover Beach. While some ruled the waves at daybreak, others wouldn't even get their toes wet until the tides were just right.

"Sometimes when the tide is too high it makes the waves mushier and they don't break as well, so we're waiting for it to get out and go out," said Shroeder.

Although there was some 'chop' in the waves, the surfers said the waves at Haulover Beach were pretty gnarly and even the surfer girls, called wahines, hit the waves.

Hallandale Beach Ocean Rescue has been patrolling the beach since Fay's effects were first felt several days ago; they say so far no one has been injured in the high waves and heavy surf.
