Seniors Score A Little Higher On FCAT Re-Takes

Only 16 Percent Passed Reading Portion Of The Test

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― High school seniors who had to retake the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test's reading and math sections fared a little better than those who did so last year – but most still failed.

Of the more than 24-thousand seniors who had to retake the reading portion of the test, 16-percent passed. That's up from 15 percent last year.

Nearly 10-thousands seniors had to retake the math portion of the test, nearly two-thirds passed which was a 26-percent increase over last year.

To graduate from high school and receive a diploma, students must pass both parts of the 10th grade FCAT or achieve certain levels on SAT or ACT college entrance tests. If they fail the FCAT exams they are allowed to retake them in the 11th and 12th grades.

Seniors who are unable to pass both tests receive a certificate of completion.  If they are able to pass the test at a later date and meet other requirements they can receive a diploma.

Reading and math scores for third through 10th grade may be released as early as next week.
