FDLE May Be Forced To Cut 50 Positions

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― A tighter than anticipated budget may cost jobs at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

According to FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey up to 50 employees could be laid off which would force the agency to pull out of all but the biggest drug cases. Last year, the agency cut 56 jobs and froze hiring on 134 openings.

Governor Charlie Crist recently ordered state agencies to hold back 4 percent of their operating budgets in case state revenue continues to drop. Bailey says he will not cut some of FDLE's critical functions like DNA testing and fingerprint checks, but he says his agency has some tough decision to make.
