FIU Selects Mark Rosenberg As New President

First came to the University as a political science professor in 1976.

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Florida International University's board of trustees has hired Mark Rosenberg to be the new school president. The official announcement was made shortly after noon on Saturday. Rosenberg said "being named president of FIU is the honor of a lifetime."

"I have committed nearly all of my professional career to FIU. I love this institution and there's no place where I would rather be," Rosenberg told the Board of Trustees Search Committee. "We will work to make sure FIU is a leading student-centered urban public research university that is locally and globally engaged. We will energize our alumni network. Our graduates have a hungry heart for FIU."

Rosenberg first arrived at FIU in 1976 as a political science professor. He also served as provost before leaving to become chancellor of the Florida State University System. Rosenberg left that position and was on sabbatical as a visiting research professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee but had planned to return to FIU over the summer as a faculty member.

He beat out Carlos Santiago, the current chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, for the job.

Rosenberg will replace Modesto ''Mitch'' Maidique who retired last year after 22 years as the school's President. Maidique has led FIU from a small commuter college built on the site of a former airport to a state university with programs equaling or exceeding more established universities.

The interviews of Santiago and Rosenberg were composed of university staff, faculty and students. Rosenberg's compensation package is believed to be worth as much as $680 thousand, which is around $50 thousand more than Maidique received.
