McCain Edged Out Obama On Election Day, Still Lost

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A strong turn out for former Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Election Day in the Sunshine State was not enough to topple the swell of support his Democratic opponent received in the days leading up to it.

According to the Associated Press, which conducted a review of 94 percent of the electorate in Florida, McCain beat Barack Obama on Election Day by almost 5 percentage points. Obama, however, beat McCain in early voter turn out and absentee ballots by more than 11 percentage points.

In the end, Obama took the state with 51.4 percent of the vote compared to McCain's 48.6 percent of the vote.

In Miami-Dade County, Obama beat McCain with 58 percent of the vote compared to McCain's 42 percent. In Broward County, Obama won with 67 percent of the vote to McCain's 32 percent. Obama won in Monroe County with 52 percent of the vote compared to McCain's 47 percent of the vote.

Obama is only the second Democrat to carry the state of Florida since 1976.
