Don't look now, but the Florida State Seminoles need just one victory to become bowl eligible for the 28th consecutive season. Luckily for the Noles, the struggling Maryland Terrapins come to Tallahassee on Saturday for the Noles final ACC game this season. But on Senior Day, FSU will also bid farewell to longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews.
Andrews has commanded one of the best defensive units year in and year out over the last 26 seasons at FSU. His defenses have been one of the key components of the FSU domination in the 1980's and 1990's. Andrews has coached future NFL players like Deion Sanders, Derrick Brooks, Andre Wadsworth, Peter Boulware and a Rhodes scholar, Myron Rolle.
FSU has struggled this season but can still start to right the ship heading into 2010. With a victory on Saturday, FSU can even its conference record at 4-4 and would likely be staring at a 6-6 record to finish the season. While nowhere near FSU standards, for a program that's rebuilding, it's respectable.
The Noles will be led by redshirt freshman quarterback E.J. Manuel. The speedy quarterback led FSU's vaunted offense to a dominating victory last week and given how bad Maryland's offense has been during the 2009 season, Manuel should have a field day against the Terps.
Perhaps more encouraging to FSU fans was the defense's improvement against Wake Forest, only allowing 28 points. While still nowhere near the dominating defenses FSU used to have, the young players are progressing and should put up another decent performance on Saturday against the Terps.
FSU beat the Terps 37-3 in Maryland in 2008. Bowl prognosticators say that if FSU wins against Maryland they could be heading to the Emerald Bowl or the Music City Bowl.
