Florida's Long Hot Summer Bucks National Trend

Nationwide, Temperature Averages Were Coolest In 11 Years

SARASOTA (CBS4) ― South Floridians who suffered through temperatures in the 90s through much of June, July, August and September won't be surprised that Florida was a bit on the 'hot' side last year.

For 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports temperatures in Florida ran slightly above average, despite a cooler than usual November and December which brought annual temperatures for the state close to average.

Paul Close, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said a lack of wind led to many of those warmer-than-normal nights across the state.

The state's annual temperature in 2008 was 70.8. The state's average annual temperature is 70.6. Forecasters predict another warmer-than-normal summer for Florida in 2009.

Florida's long hot summer bucked a nationwide trend toward cooler temperatures.

Nationally, 2008 dipped to near average, at 53 degrees -- the coolest year since 1997.  Since 1901, the temperature nationwide averaged 52.8 degrees.
