Florida Tourism Drops
MIAMI (CBS4.com) ―
Tourism in the state of Florida dipped almost 2 percent in 2007, according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald. The drop marked the first decline for a year since the September 11, 2001 attacks damaged the travel industry.
Some travel analysts are pointing to tougher times ahead with gas prices reaching record levels and the overall economy in a recession. This could explain the 7% increase in Floridians choosing to vacation inside the state.
In South Florida, occupancy in hotels dropped 4% in Broward County and remained stagnant in Miami-Dade during 2007. Even with the drop, hotel prices are increasing along with room revenues.
The news was not all bad. Canadian visitors jumped 10 percent, aided by a continually weakening American dollar.
