Buying Nutritious Food, Without Breaking The Bank

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Food prices climbed almost one percent from March to April. That was the largest jump in 18 years, but there are ways to select nutritious food that's not so expensive.

Jennifer Roberge's family is about expand and so is her shopping budget.

"Some things can be really expensive. It's outrageous," said shopper Jennifer Roberge.

Jennifer has teamed up with registered dietitian Marisa Moore to find less expensive, yet healthy food at the grocery store, starting with produce.

"Berries are a great choice this time of the year because you can actually freeze half of them and use them later in the year," said Moore. "You know, when it comes to vegetables, it's a good idea to look for seasonal, local produce."

Jennifer is also looking for ways to save on meat.

"Ground beef is actually one of the things that has actually increased in price recently," said Moore. "You can add black beans to the mix and actually stretch your food dollar that way. Beans are a great source of protein; a great source of fiber."

At only about 20 cents per serving, black beans are also a great source of protein and B-vitamins.
