Food Stamp Programs Not Adequately Administered
WASHINGTON (CBS4) ―
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches the sad state of affairs in America is more Americans are going hungry than ever before. Now, the Agriculture Department is concerned that dozens of states aren't adequately administering food stamp programs that help provide food to the Americans who struggle to put it on the table every day.
The Agriculture Department said multiple states have run the program in a way that is "problematic and resulted in a more complex and difficult enrollment process and that the practices have not served our clients or our taxpayers.
The news from the Agriculture Department comes just after an annual report showed only 18 states enrolled 70 percent or more of those eligible for food stamps in 2007. The report showed that the states that struggled the most were among the most populous. New York had 61 percent of eligible citizens participate, Florida saw 57 percent participating, and Texas had 55 percent of those eligible enrolled in the state program.
The Agriculture Department was especially critical of states where private firms, rather than state workers, processed enrollment.
