Fort Lauderdale commissioners have voted to arm the city's police officers with semiautomatic assault rifles to match the weapons used by criminals.
Police Chief Frank Adderley says there's been a rise in assault rifle use by criminals and officers need to upgrade their weapons to keep residents safe.
City commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday night in favor of the assault rifles. They cited the mass shootings at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech and last year's slaying of a Miami-Dade County police officer by a criminal with an AK-47.
Miami Chief John Timoney in September authorized similar weapons for his police officers.
