Police ID Man Killed In Early Morning Traffic Stop

Batiany Georges, 29, Had Just Been Released From Prison In August

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Ft. Lauderdale police have identified the man who was shot to death by one of their officers during a traffic stop early Sunday morning.

It all began around 1:30 a.m., when city police officers tried to pull over a driver in the 11 hundred block of North Andrews Avenue. The driver, 29-year-old Batiany Georges, reportedly refused to stop. He was eventually forced to pull over by Sergeant Jeffrey Riche and officer Johnathan Jones in the 1100 block of Northwest 4th Avenue.

Investigators said at that point a "a confrontation ensued between the culprit and officers, escalating to the police involved shooting." Both Riche and Georges were hit by rounds.

Riche was rushed to Broward General Medical Center where he underwent surgery for a bullet wound to his hand. He's expected to make a full recovery. Georges was also taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police say Georges, who was from Lauderdale Lakes, was released from prison in August and has an extensive arrest history.

Riche has been a police officer with the City of Fort Lauderdale since 2003. Prior to joining the City of Fort Lauderdale, Riche was a police officer with Plantation and a corrections officer with the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Jones has only been with the Ft. Lauderdale police since last year. He's been placed on administrative leave as per departmental policy.
