Fort Myers Police Officer Murdered

FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS) ― A Fort Myers police officer, who was responding to a downtown disturbance, was shot and killed early Friday morning.

According to the Lee Country Sheriff's Office, there was an exchange of gunfire during the disturbance. The officer and one armed suspect were killed during the exchange.

The officer was a former missionary who had been working with the department for about a year. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

The names of both the officer and the suspect have not been released. Authorities don't know what prompted the incident and if the dead gunman acted alone.
