Freighter Freed After Crashing Into Marina Wall

Tug Boats Free It

MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) ― No injuries were reported after Panamanian flagged freighter slammed into a wall at the Miami Beach Marina as it left the Port of Miami.

The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday as the 252-foot Rio Haina, which was carrying a load of containers, was leaving port. The U.S. Coast Guard said the ship lost power and its ability to steer as its captain tried to navigate out of the port through Government Cut.

A net was placed around the ship to catch any fuel that may escape, but so far the Coast Guard said there have been no signs of any pollution.

Coast Guard crews and tug boat captains spent Sunday morning and afternoon pulling the stuck freighter free from the wall and then towing it to the Coast Guard station.
