Ft. Lauderdale Settles Sidewalk Suit For $97K
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
Fort Lauderdale city commissioners have agreed to settle with a Canadian woman whose husband died after tripping over an uncovered water meter in the sidewalk.
During a vacation in 2005, Gilles Massey and his wife were walking back to their hotel from the beach when the accident occurred. The 65-year-old man, who fractured his right knee, was flown by air ambulance to Canada for surgery.
A week later, he died from complications.
Last week, city commissioners agreed to pay Massey's widow, Gisele St-Arneault, $97-thousand to settle a negligence suit.
St-Arneault's attorney Kelly Hancock says her client "lost her husband, which is an extremely sad case, but under the circumstances it was fair for both sides."
