Gambling Granny Charged With Neglect
Hallandale Beach (CBS4) ―
Two children are safe after their guardian left them in the car while going to gamble at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach. The woman went to the casino to try her luck and won a jackpot of at least one night in jail.
The children, a 14-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were seen in the car by a bystander, who contacted security. Hallandale Beach Police say they were in the car, with the windows up, for at least an hour and 15 minutes.
The children were taken into the casino, where they were given food and drink while officers tried to find their guardian. "The children seem fine," said Daniel Adkins, who works at the Mardi Gras Casino, "We brought them inside and they both cooperated, gave us the name of who they were here with and we were able to locate the grandmother."
The children were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital to be checked over. They are fine. They were discharged a few hours later; no word on whom they're with now.
Police took the woman, Jeanne Shahan of North Miami, into custody. She's been charged with two counts of aggravated child neglect. Police said Shahan is the grandmother of one of the children. After spending the night in jail, Shahan bonded out Wednesday morning.
