Two Hospitalized After Cars Slam Into Gas Pump

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Two people are in the hospital after vehicles involved in a car crash slammed into a gas pump, igniting a fire.

A car and a truck smashed into each other at the intersection of W. Davie Boulevard and Riverland Road in Fort Lauderdale Sunday evening. The crash caused the pick-up to hit a gas pump at the BP gas station on the corner. Sabrina Kimble who works at a Subway Restaurant across the street told CBS 4 News Reporter Joan Murray that the pickup driver sped through the intersection trying to beat a red light. "I heard the screech and then heard the roar and I started screaming before he hit."

When the smoke cleared, three vehicles were charred.

Robert Harris was pumping gas when the chaos began. "I was terrified. I'm thanking God I'm alive still." Harris had to rescue his mother, who was trapped in the car as the flames inched closer.

"I was frightened I was gonna die," Shanetta Jones said, "Then my son saved me, by the will of God."

"I saw lights flash and it completely engulfed into flames," Kay Duncan said. She snapped photos of flames shooting 40 feet high. "If it had blown totally up, none of us would have been safe. I was in my car and other people were walking up and I was not going any closer."

A Fort Lauderdale police officer was driving by when the explosion occurred. "He raced over to find the emergency pumps to turn off the pumps, which he did," said Detective Kathy Collins.

When firefighters arrived, they found seven people wounded. On many was badly burned, lying on the ground, and another woman had serious burns.

Officials are still piecing together just what happened. The owner of the gas station is contracting with a company to clean up the remaining fuel spilled.
