FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―

Fort Lauderdale police are investigating whether a teen was shot and killed this week because he was gay.

Police said 17-year-old Simmie Williams was dressed in women's clothing at the time of the shooting and may have been a victim of a hate crime.

The incident happened on Friday at northwest 6th street and 10th avenue in Fort Lauderdale

The area where Williams was found is a popular hangout for transgender prostitutes and police are looking into the possibility that the teen may have been working as a prostitute.

Williams' mother says the boy wanted to go to culinary school.
