Police Working To Crack Jewel Theft Ring

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Law enforcement officials from across the country will meet in Miami this week to discuss how to stop a rash of jewel thefts.

In the past three weeks, about half a million dollars in gems and precious stones have been stolen from jewelers in South Florida. Investigators believe while the robberies appear to be random, they are in fact the work of a loosely organized network of thieves who are part of a semi-organized crime network known as South American Theft Groups.

Gem theft experts believe the number of robberies could rise in the coming week because the Jewelers International Showcase, the largest wholesale show in Florida, begins this Thursday on South Beach.
