UM Briefly On Lockdown Following Reports Of Gunman
CORAL GABLES (CBS4) ―
A gunman made his way onto the University of Miami campus Sunday morning.
This time, however, UM officials locked down the campus and activated their emergency alert system.
A student called police to report that he saw two men and one apparently holding a gun outside his dormitory some time at 5 a.m. Sunday.
He described the first man as a man about 20 years old wearing light grey pants and a white hooded sweatshirt with thin blue stripes with its sleeves rolled up. The second man was described as a dark-skinned man also about the same age with a short haircut, wearing dark jogging pants and a black hooded sweatshirt, sleeves rolled up. One of the men was holding a gun. They were standing in front of an older model 4-door green Nissan Sentra or Altima.
The gunman, however, was not found. UM was cleared three hours later.
Last week, UM students criticized officials for not informing them about an active police scene in which two students were robbed at gunpoint near the campus.
In last week's incident two University of Miami students, Christian Rivera and Aaron Kurz, were robbed at gunpoint in the middle of Ponce de Leon Boulevard while walking back from the Metrorail station after attending a Miami Heat game at the AmericanAirlines Arena.
It happened at 10:40 p.m. just yards away from the campus.
Coral Gables Police arrested 17-year-old Felipe Bugueno, 17-year-old Michael Wasson and 17-year-old Andre Jones. They are being charged with robbery with a weapon and grand theft.
