A Central Florida woman has died of the H1N1 flu virus, the second death to the disease in the state.
The 30-year-old woman died early Tuesday at Florida Hospital in Altamonte Springs, which is a suburb or Orlando. She had checked into the hospital earlier in June and had been in isolation.
The woman reportedly had high-risk respiratory complications that made her more vulnerable to the flu's effects.
A nine-year-old Miami-Dade boy's death was the first H1N1 swine flu death in the state of Florida. Across the state, there have been 562 confirmed and probable cases of H1N1 swine flu reported.
The World Health Organization has declared a swine flu pandemic the first flu pandemic in 41 years; the declaration of a pandemic usually pushes drug makers to fast-track production of a vaccine.
Since swine flu first emerged in Mexico and the United States in April, it has spread to 74 countries around the globe. Most cases have been mild and do not require much medical care.
