A trio of South Florida emergency workers were honored on Friday by the Seminole Tribe because of their part in a convoy of volunteers who went to the flooded, starving and seething Haiti, carrying aid when hurricanes ravaged the country.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, had endured three storms -- Hanna, Gustav and Fay -- over August and September - killing hundreds of people and leaving tens of thousands without basic staples.
The three emergency medical technicians recently spent five days in hurricane-ravaged Haiti as part of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Association of Davie aid mission. They recounted how they saw as many as 800 patients between Tuesday and Friday of last week in the city of Gonaives.
They explained how one of those patients was a 3-day-old boy. The newborn's mother died during birth and the family was so distraught over her death that they decided to let the child die with her.
The infant's aunt changed her mind and took the newborn to where the medical technicians were treating patients.
The medics were able to revive the newborn with formula and fluids. By the end of the day, the infant was awake, alert and in much better health.
The aunt told the group she would raise the boy, and asked if they would help in naming the baby.
The mission group and the woman decided to name the boy after the three men who saved his life: Noah Jason Benjamin.
