Three Workers Injured In Gas Station Explosion

(CBS4) Three workers at a Hallandale Beach gas station were critically burned Saturday afternoon when an underground tank they were repairing exploded, officials told CBS4 news.

The incident happened at 3:18 p.m. at the U-Gas on Southwest 10th Street and Hallandale Beach Boulevard, according to Richard Stover of Hallandale Beach Fire.

The three male workers -- which included a 19-year-old and 32-year-old -- were rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. A fourth worker was able to get out safely, officials told CBS4's Tiffani Helberg.

An official for Petrofuse, the company that had been doing work, declined to release information.

"We're still gathering information," Raul "Nick" Necoechea, of Petrofuse, told CBS4.com. He declined to give any details about what went wrong and would not release the names of the workers.

People who live in the area reported smelling something strange, which was followed by a plume of smoke.

CBS4's Tiffani Helberg contributed to this report.
