Huge Hammerhead Reeled In Off S. Fla. Coast

Hammerhead Weighed More Than 1,000 Lbs.

SINGER ISLAND (CBS4) ― A Florida fisherman is still reeling about the biggest catch of his life when he reeled in a hammerhead shark that weighed more than a thousand pounds and was more than 13 feet long.

Fritz Van Der Grift caught the giant shark off the coast of Singer Island in Palm Beach County.

The hammerhead was swimming in shallow water feeding on spinner sharks.

The shark was so big, the scale stopped working at 1,038 pounds. The current record is 1,280 pounds.

Van Der Grift didn't plan on killing the shark. He said he just wanted a few pictures and planned on releasing it but the shark was injured and became exhausted and drowned.

Sharks are not protected animals but marine experts aren't letting its death go to waste. The shark's organs will be flown to a San Diego laboratory for research.
