Broward Fire Rescue To ICE Heart Attack Victims

Infusion Of Chilled Solutions Increases Survival Chances

There Are Four ICE Center Hospitals In Broward
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― The next time a car accident survivor or an elderly person suffers a heart attack, Broward Sheriffs Fire Rescue will be able to ICE them.

ICE, or Induced Cooling by EMS (emergency medical services), involves the cooling of heart attack patients using chilled intravenous solutions to increase their chances of survival.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue is the first metropolitan fire rescue system in Florida to utilize hypothermic resuscitation in the field to increase survivability of heart attack victims.

The implementation of the ICE procedure is the second, and final, phase of the county's new system-wide cardiac resuscitation program designed to deliver cutting edge medicine to the residents and visitors.

"The second phase of our cardiac resuscitation program is designed to improve extended patient outcomes by lowering the body temperature before the patient arrives at the ICE Center," said Assistant Chief Stephen Krivjanik.

All of the BSFR rescue units have been equipped with temperature- controlled cooling units that maintain the solutions at just above freezing (33-34 degrees Fahrenheit) for immediate administration.

Patients being treated with "ICE" will be transported to the nearest ICE center facility for treatment. Presently, there are four ICE center hospitals in Broward; Holy Cross Hospital, Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida Medical Center and Imperial Point Medical Center.
