Hialeah Set To Install Red-Light Cameras By Dec. 1
HIALEAH (CBS4) ―
If you're driving through Hialeah, you might not want to push your luck and try to make it under that yellow light. The city of Hialeah announced that it will install the first red-light cameras at W 8th Avenue and 49th Street and E 8th Avenue at 55th Street.
The new cameras are part of a program called "Red means Stop." The city claims the program will protect drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians from injuries or crashes caused by red-light runners. The city chose the locations based on where red-light running most commonly occurred in the city.
The traffic cameras will capture still images and video of red-light running and will be operational by December 1. There will be a 120-day warning period that will end on April 1, 2010 where drivers will only get a warning notice. However, after April 1, the fines will run $125.00 per offense.
The cameras will be on 24 hours a day and will be run by American Traffic Solutions Inc. All violations will be reviewed and approved by the Hialeah Police Department prior to being issued.
